In addition to children engaging in objectionable activities on Facebook, a recent study shows that with the increase in online social media use comes an increased risk from online predators.
The Crimes Against Children Research Center has recently released some alarming statistics:
•1 in 5 teenagers who regularly use the internet say they have received unwanted sexual solicitation online
•77% of the targets for online predators were age 14 or older, and 22% were users ages 10 to 13
•25% of children have been exposed to unwanted pornographic material online
•Less than 25% of children who encounter a sexual approach or solicitation told a parent
With so much objectionable activity and unwanted sexual predatory behavior taking place, if your child isn’t telling you about it, how are you going to be able to protect them? You can protect them when they are at home, but how can you protect them when they are online, without having to stand next to them, or sit with them every minute while they are online?
One of the ways that parents are monitoring their Facebook activity is with a device called the Cobra SpyStick. This covert monitoring tool allows parents to silently monitor their child’s computer activity, recording every keystroke, username and password, website visited, chat messages, and email. In addition to logging every single keystroke your child types, the Cobra SpyStick also takes screenshots, both at specified time intervals, and when certain words are typed.
For example, if you wanted to just casually monitor your child’s Facebook activity, you could set it so that it took a picture of the screen every 5 minutes, to give you have a general idea of what they are doing on Facebook. You could also set it to take screenshots every time your child types in a certain pre-determined word or phrase, such as “sex” or “drugs”, or when they type out their phone number.
